    Evidence for an Additional Heat Source in the Warm Ionized Medium of Galaxies

    Spatial variations of the [S II]/H-Alpha and [N II]/H-Alpha line intensity ratios observed in the gaseous halo of the Milky Way and other galaxies are inconsistent with pure photoionization models. They appear to require a supplemental heating mechanism that increases the electron temperature at low densities n_e. This would imply that in addition to photoionization, which has a heating rate per unit volume proportional to n_e^2, there is another source of heat with a rate per unit volume proportional to a lower power of n_e. One possible mechanism is the dissipation of interstellar plasma turbulence, which according to Minter & Spangler (1997) heats the ionized interstellar medium in the Milky Way at a rate ~ 1x10^-25 n_e ergs cm^-3 s^-1. If such a source were present, it would dominate over photoionization heating in regions where n_e < 0.1 cm^-3, producing the observed increases in the [S II]/H-Alpha and [N II]/H-Alpha intensity ratios at large distances from the galactic midplane, as well as accounting for the constancy of [S II]/[N II], which is not explained by pure photoionization. Other supplemental heating sources, such as magnetic reconnection, cosmic rays, or photoelectric emission from small grains, could also account for these observations, provided they supply to the warm ionized medium ~ 10^-5 ergs s^-1 per cm^2 of Galactic disk.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figur

    The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper Northern Sky Survey

    The Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) has surveyed the distribution and kinematics of ionized gas in the Galaxy above declination -30 degrees. The WHAM Northern Sky Survey (WHAM-NSS) has an angular resolution of one degree and provides the first absolutely-calibrated, kinematically-resolved map of the H-Alpha emission from the Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) within ~ +/-100 km/s of the Local Standard of Rest. Leveraging WHAM's 12 km/s spectral resolution, we have modeled and removed atmospheric emission and zodiacal absorption features from each of the 37,565 spectra. The resulting H-Alpha profiles reveal ionized gas detected in nearly every direction on the sky with a sensitivity of 0.15 R (3 sigma). Complex distributions of ionized gas are revealed in the nearby spiral arms up to 1-2 kpc away from the Galactic plane. Toward the inner Galaxy, the WHAM-NSS provides information about the WIM out to the tangent point down to a few degrees from the plane. Ionized gas is also detected toward many intermediate velocity clouds at high latitudes. Several new H II regions are revealed around early B-stars and evolved stellar cores (sdB/O). This work presents the details of the instrument, the survey, and the data reduction techniques. The WHAM-NSS is also presented and analyzed for its gross properties.     Signature of strong atom-cavity interaction on critical coupling

    We study a critically coupled cavity doped with resonant atoms with metamaterial slabs as mirrors. We show how resonant atom-cavity interaction can lead to a splitting of the critical coupling dip.     A Search for Extraplanar Dust in Nearby Edge-On Spirals

    We present high resolution BV images of 12 edge-on spiral galaxies observed with the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. These images were obtained to search for extraplanar (|z| > 0.4 kpc) absorbing dust structures similar to those previously found in NGC 891 (Howk & Savage 1997). Our imaged galaxies include a sample of seven massive L_*-like spiral galaxies within D<25 Mpc that have inclinations i > 87 deg from the plane of the sky. We find that five of these seven systems show extraplanar dust, visible as highly-structured absorbing clouds against the background stellar light of the galaxies. The more prominent structures are estimated to have associated gas masses >10^5 M_sun; the implied potential energies are > 10^(52) ergs. All of the galaxies in our sample that show detectable halpha emission at large z also show extraplanar dust structures. None of those galaxies for which extraplanar halpha searches were negative show evidence for extensive high-z dust. The existence of extraplanar dust is a common property of massive spiral galaxies. We discuss several mechanisms for shaping the observed dust features, emphasizing the possibility that these dusty clouds represent the dense phase of a multiphase medium at high-z in spiral galaxies. The correlation between high-z dust and extraplanar Halpha emission may simply suggest that both trace the high-z interstellar medium in its various forms (or phases), the existence of which may ultimately be driven by vigorous star formation in the underlying disk.     Proteolytic Activity in the Midgut of Helicoverpa armigera (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) Larvae Fed on Wild Relatives of Chickpea, Cicer arietinum

    Wild relatives of crops are an important source of resistance genes against insect pests. However, it is important to identify the accessions of wild relatives with different mechanisms of resistance to broaden the basis and increase the levels of resistance to insect pests. Therefore, we evaluated 15 accessions of wild relatives of chickpea belonging to seven species and five genotypes of cultivated chickpea for their resistance to pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, which is the most damaging pest of chickpea. The test genotypes were evaluated for resistance to H. armigera using detached pod assay. Data were also recorded on activity of the digestive enzymes in the midgut of the larvae fed on different wild relatives of chickpea. All the wild chickpea genotypes suffered lower pod damage and weight gained by the third-instar larvae of H. armigera was lower when fed on them compared with the cultivated chickpea. The accessions, IG 69979 (Cicer cuneatum), PI 599066, IG 70006, IG 70018, IG 70022 (Cicer bijugum), IG 599076 (Cicer chrossanicum), and IG 72933, IG 72953 (Cicer reticulatum), showed high levels of resistance to H. armigera. There were significant differences in protease activity in larval gut of H. armigera fed on different wild relatives of chickpea. Total protease, trypsin, and chymotrypsin activities were lowest in larva fed on PI 599066 (C. bijugum) compared with that in the larvae fed IG 69979 (C. cuneatum) and IG 70022 (C. bijugum). Aminopeptidase activity was highest in the larvae fed on IG 70022 (C. bijugum) and IG 599076 (C. chrossanicum), whereas lowest activity was recorded in the larvae fed on ICC 3137 and KAK 2 (susceptible checks). The variation in protease activities may be due to the presence of protease inhibitors in the wild relatives or hyperproduction of enzymes by the larvae as result of protease inhibitor activity of the wild relatives, resulting in low weight gain by larvae. The results suggested that wild relatives of chickpea with diverse mechanisms of resistance can be exploited to increase the levels and diversify the basis of resistance to H. armigera in cultivated chickpea

    H-alpha Kinematics of the SINGS Nearby Galaxies Survey. II

    This is the second part of an H-alpha kinematics follow-up survey of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) sample. The aim of this program is to shed new light on the role of baryons and their kinematics and on the dark/luminous matter relation in the star forming regions of galaxies, in relation with studies at other wavelengths. The data for 37 galaxies are presented. The observations were made using Fabry-Perot interferometry with the photon-counting camera FaNTOmM on 4 different telescopes, namely the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6m, the ESO La Silla 3.6m, the William Herschel 4.2m, and the Observatoire du mont Megantic 1.6m telescopes. The velocity fields are computed using custom IDL routines designed for an optimal use of the data. The kinematical parameters and rotation curves are derived using the GIPSY software. It is shown that non-circular motions associated with galactic bars affect the kinematical parameters fitting and the velocity gradient of the rotation curves. This leads to incorrect determinations of the baryonic and dark matter distributions in the mass models derived from those rotation curves.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables.     Far Ultraviolet Imagery of the Edge-On Spiral Galaxy NGC 4631

    Far ultraviolet FUV imagery of the edge-on, Sc/SBd galaxy, NGC 4631 reveals very strong FUV emission, resulting from active star formation, uniformly distributed along the galactic mid- plane. Multi-band imagery, HI and HII position-velocity curves and extinction considerations all imply that the emission is from the outer edges of the visible galaxy. The overall FUV morphology of this edge-on disk system is remarkably similar to those of the so-called "chain galaxies" evident at high redshift, thus suggesting a similar interpretation for at least some of those distant objects. FUV, U, B and V magnitudes, measured for 48 star forming regions, along with corresponding H-alpha and H-beta measurements are used to construct diagnostic color-color diagrams. Although there are significant exceptions, most of the star forming regions are less massive and older than 30 Doradus. Comparison with the expectations from two star formation models yields ages of 2.7 to 10 Myr for the instantaneous burst (IB) model and star formation cut-off ages of 0 to 9 Myr for the continuous star formation (CSF) model. Interpreted in terms of the IB model the photometry implies a total created mass in the 48 star forming regions of 25 million solar-masses. When viewed as resulting from constant star formation the photometry implies a star formation rate of 0.33 solar-masses/yr. These results are compared to those derived from FIR and radio observations.     Extraplanar Emission-Line Gas in Edge-On Spiral Galaxies. II. Optical Spectroscopy

    The results from deep long-slit spectroscopy of nine edge-on spiral galaxies with known extraplanar line emission are reported. Emission from Halpha, [N II] lambda 6548, 6583, and [S II] lambda 6716, 6731 is detected out to heights of a few kpc in all of these galaxies. Several other fainter diagnostic lines such as [O I] lambda 6300, [O III] lambda 4959, 5007, and He I lambda 5876 are also detected over a smaller scale. The relative strengths, centroids and widths of the various emission lines provide constraints on the electron density, temperature, reddening, source(s) of ionization, and kinematics of the extraplanar gas. In all but one galaxy, photoionization by massive OB stars alone has difficulties explaining all of the line ratios in the extraplanar gas. Hybrid models that combine photoionization by OB stars and another source of ionization such as photoionization by turbulent mixing layers or shocks provide a better fit to the data. The (upper limits on the) velocity gradients measured in these galaxies are consistent with the predictions of the galactic fountain model to within the accuracy of the measurements.Comment: 25 pages + several jpg figures.     Tau PET and relative cerebral blood flow in Dementia with Lewy bodies: A PET study

    Purpose: Alpha-synuclein often co-occurs with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology in Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB). From a dynamic [18F]flortaucipir PET scan we derived measures of both tau binding and relative cerebral blood flow (rCBF). We tested whether regional tau binding or rCBF differed between DLB patients and AD patients and controls and examined their association with clinical characteristics of DLB. / Methods: Eighteen patients with probable DLB, 65 AD patients and 50 controls underwent a dynamic 130-minute [18F]flortaucipir PET scan. DLB patients with positive biomarkers for AD based on cerebrospinal fluid or amyloid PET were considered as DLB with AD pathology(DLB-AD+). Receptor parametric mapping(cerebellar gray matter reference region) was used to extract regional binding potential (BPND) and R1, reflecting (AD-specific) tau pathology and rCBF, respectively. First, we performed regional comparisons of [18F]flortaucipir BPND and R1 between diagnostic groups. In DLB patients only, we performed regression analyses between regional [18F]flortaucipir BPND, R1 and performance on ten neuropsychological tests. / Results: Regional [18F]flortaucipir BPND in DLB was comparable with tau binding in controls (p>0.05). Subtle higher tau binding was observed in DLB-AD+ compared to DLB-AD- in the medial temporal and parietal lobe (both p<0.05). Occipital and lateral parietal R1 was lower in DLB compared to AD and controls (all p<0.01). Lower frontal R1 was associated with impaired performance on digit span forward (standardized beta, stβ=0.72) and category fluency (stβ=0.69) tests. Lower parietal R1 was related to lower delayed (stβ=0.50) and immediate (stβ=0.48) recall, VOSP number location (stβ=0.70) and fragmented letters (stβ=0.59) scores. Lower occipital R1 was associated to worse performance on VOSP fragmented letters (stβ=0.61), all p<0.05. / Conclusion: The amount of tau binding in DLB was minimal and did not differ from controls. However, there were DLB-specific occipital and lateral parietal relative cerebral blood flow reductions compared to both controls and AD patients. Regional rCBF, but not tau binding, was related to cognitive impairment. This indicates that assessment of rCBF may give more insight into disease mechanisms in DLB than tau PET
